Moseley Bog, today part of The Shire Country Park, has been named the UK’s top hidden spot. In a survey of bloggers, J.R.R. Tolkien’s childhood haunt beat locations from across the UK to take the top spot.

A couple from Bolton, England have built a hobbit-hole in their garden for their children to play in. The den featured on the Channel 4 programme George Clark’s Amazing Spaces on Thursday 5th June.

Researchers at the University of Florida have discovered a new 16-foot long (5 metres) ancient crocodile in the Amazon. The creature has been named Anthracosuchus balrogus.

A series of previously unpublished letters by Tolkien has been published in the August 2014 issue of Writing Magazine.

In a survey by YouGov, commissioned by John Lewis and Barnado’s, The Hobbit has been ranked fourth in the list of Britain’s best-loved children’s books.

British MEP Dan Hannan has blogged on The Telegraph: “Supposing him to be the gardener: Sam Gamgee, the Battle of the Somme and my Great Uncle Bill”.
