In an blogpost for the Guardian, writer Damian Walter argues that, despite Tolkien’s excellence, his stories are “profoundly conservative” fantasies that “mythologise human history”.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the final film in Sir Peter Jackson’s trilogy of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien on The Hobbit, has had a strong start by taking $117 million in the opening weekend.

British daily newspaper, The Telegraph, have released online an interview with Tolkien which was originally published on 22 March 1968. The interview – a must-read for Tolkien fans – covers a wide range of topics including monsters, the films, and his success.

Professor Tom Shippey and Nelson Goering will be teaching an online course with the Mythgard Institute on Tolkien and Beowulf. Classes for “Beowulf Through Tolkien, And Vice Versa” will run from 13 January to 3 April 2015.

American television programme, Saturday Night Live, has filmed a parody called “The Office: Middle-earth” starting Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins. For those who haven’t seen the original UK version of The Office, Martin Freeman rose to prominance as the character Tim.

Stephen Colbert, American comedian and well-known Tolkien fan, “interviews” Smaug live on air.
