The Bodleian Libraries and TORCH have released the video from “The Lord of the Rings: Tolkien’s Legacy”, an event held on 29th October to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings.
The event featured a series of three short talks from Dr Patrick Curry, Dr Dimitra Fimi, and Professor Andy Orchard, followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Stuart Lee.
Patrick Curry (Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Wales, Lampeter) addressed the question “is The Lord of the Rings a good book?”.
Dimitra Fimi (Lecturer in English, Cardiff Metropolitan University) discussed the challenges of teaching Tolkien’s work at a university level.
Andy Orchard (Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon, University of Oxford) emphasised Tolkien’s profound contribution to academia.
The panel discussed a range of topics such as the uptake of Old Norse, the literary canon, and Tolkien’s work with DPhil students.
