An English teacher at the University of New Mexico is offering a class to students comparing Mediaevalism and Middle-earth.
The course, run by Megan Abrahamson, uses Tolkien’s stories to help students to understand about the Middle Ages. The course, open to all students at the university, uses the accessibility of Tolkien as a way of getting students interested in the Middle Ages.
Abrahamson said: “(It’s nice) to see a wide variety of interdisciplinary degrees in the class; I think that always brings a lot to the classroom. One of the best ways to study the Middle Ages is by connecting it to something that is more modern, like the ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘The Hobbit’ – I think that bridge is what is really interesting to study.”
