J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit has come in join seventeenth place in a teachers’ list of books all children should read before leaving primary school.

Adding to an already impressive list of animals named after concepts in Tolkien’s works, a recently-discovered bug in Patagonia is to be named ”planois smaug”.

Michal Kazmierczak is well-known in the LEGO fan community for his large recreations of film sets from Indiana Jones and the planet Mustafa from Star Wars. Now he’s turned his attention to The Hobbit.

NASA‘s New Horizons proposals will use fictional characters and locations, including from Tolkien’s Middle-earth, to name features of Pluto and its moons next week.

Architects have drawn up plans to turn the former Shoreham Cement Works in Sussex into an environmentally-friendly holiday resort with 600 pods, in a design compared to the Shire.

The 2015 “What Kids Are Reading” report has revealed that Tolkien’s works are now less popular with UK children when compared with previous years’ studies. While last year Tolkien came joint 6th in the top-10 list of overall most popular authors, this year he doesn’t feature in the list at all.
