Today marks 100 years since Middle-earth first came into being. On 24 September 1914, Tolkien wrote the poem ‘The Voyage of Éarendel the Evening Star’. It was, as Christopher Tolkien described it, “the first of the mythology”.

Enrolment has opened for two online classes taught by Dr Dimitra Fimi, the first of which will start this September.

Running again this year from the 14th July; this MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) hosted by Vanderbilt University provides a most enlightening experience of Tolkien, romance and myth. It takes these narratives and presents them as experienced in contemporary media. It also includes on-line activities utilising  ‘Lord of the Rings Online‘ (LOTRO).

The Brotherhood Workshop, a group of LEGO animators, are well-known to Tolkien fans for their parodies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings films. In the latest video, they very astutely answer the question “Why can’t the Eagles take them to Mordor?”.

The organisers of Mythmoot III: Ever On have issued a call for papers. Mythmoot is the annual conference of the Mythgard Institute, and is due to be held in Baltimore, MD,  10-11 January 2015.
