As we mark 100 years since the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, Tolkien fans will be remembering the T.C.B.S. (Tea Club and Barrovian Society), the small group of friends from King Edward’s School Birmingham who were tragically caught up by war.

The University of Oxford has launched a campaign to place personal accounts of the First World War online in time for the centenary of Armistice Day in 2018.

King Edward’s School, Birmingham, has produced a short documentary on Robert Quilter Gilson, a close friend of Tolkien who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
