The First and Second Ages was first published in 1992 as the third book in the Peter Roe series. It has long since fallen out of print but, with our partners at Luna Press, we have republished it in the same format as Peter Roe book nos. 17, 18 and 19 as a print-on-demand publication. The First and Second Ages will be published on Friday 4th September 2020 and is available to pre-order now.

Just as we worked to digitise all our historic magazines and journals – available for free to all members of the Society in the our members’ area – our aim is for all historic Peter Roe books to be republished in this format and made available to purchase. This will ensure that previous scholarship can be available to new readers, whilst collectors will be able to acquire the entire set.

Edited by Trevor Reynolds, The First and Second Ages is a collection of four papers presented at The Tolkien Society Seminar held at the David Baxter Centre in Milton Keynes on 2 June 1990. This book explores those underpinnings and in particular the nature of good and evil, creators and destroyers, and the very foundations of the world itself. It is a diverse collection of four articles which will no doubt cause the reader to reflect on their own understanding of Tolkien’s works

About the Peter Roe Memorial Fund

The Tolkien Society’s seminar proceedings – and other booklets such as the Sindarin Lexicon – are published under the auspices of the Peter Roe Memorial Fund. The Fund commemorates Peter Roe who died in 1979 aged 16 after being hit by a speeding lorry outside his home. He was on his way to buy envelopes to enclose his enthusiastic letter to the Society. Peter was clearly an incredibly talented young man, producing stories, artwork and maps. Peter’s Dwarfish Fragments were published in Mallorn 15 in September 1980. Proceeds from the sale of Peter Roe books go back into the Fund to ensure that it is self-perpetuating. The Society will continue to produce book in the “Peter Roe Series” to honour his memory.
