Dr Mark Atherton, author of There and Back Again: J.R.R. Tolkien and the Origins of The Hobbit, will be the guest speaker at The Tolkien Society’s Annual Dinner on Saturday 22 April 2017.
The Annual Dinner takes place during the Springmoot and AGM weekend, held this year at the Warwick Arms Hotel in Warwick between Friday 21 April and Sunday 23 April 2016.
Mark Atherton joins a long line of distinguished guests of honour, including Priscilla and Michael Tolkien, Humphrey Carpenter, Tom Shippey, and Alan Lee.
About the speaker
Dr Mark Atherton is a lecturer in English language and medieval English literature at Regent’s Park College, Oxford.
He is the author of There and Back Again: J.R.R.Tolkien and the Origins of The Hobbit, which covers the literary and linguistic interests of J.R.R. Tolkien and their influence on his fictional writings, and has contributed a chapter on “Tolkien and Old English” to A Tolkien Companion edited by Stuart Lee.
Mark is currently working on The Making of England: A New History of the Anglo-Saxon World and The Battle of Maldon: War and Peace in Anglo-Saxon England. A completely revised edition of his popular Teach Yourself Old English (Anglo-Saxon) is planned for early 2018.
