Alan Lee was presented with a gold badge and honorary membership of the Tolkien Society during its Annual Dinner on Saturday 9 April.
Honorary membership is the highest distinction the Tolkien Society can confer.
“This award is a small token of our appreciation for the joy and inspiration that Alan Lee has brought to millions of readers and budding artists the world over,” said Tolkien Society Chairman Shaun Gunner.
“Alan’s artwork has captivated readers for 25 years through his ability to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s works alive, and I hope that he will continue to enchant readers for another 25 years.
“We are all in awe of his achievements, so it was only right that the Tolkien Society – an international society of Tolkien readers – recognise his unique contribution to the visual canon of Middle-earth.”
The award was presented to Alan following his after-dinner talk.
He join previous recipients such as Tolkien’s children Christopher Tolkien and Priscilla Tolkien, academic Tom Shippey, broadcaster Brian Sibley, and fellow illustrators Roger Garland and H.M. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
