Biographical Works 

READ THIS FIRST! Among the many biographies now available, Humprey Carpenter is the only general biographer to date who has been given access to JRR Tolkien's personal letters and papers. John Garth was also allowed access to personal papers for his biography of Tolkien's early life and war experiences. Hammond and Scull also had access to orginal material for JRR Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator.
Other biographies may relate additional material but it tends to be unsourced, and some lean towards docu-drama, which is entertaining for younger readers but adds nothing material. Therefore we recommend that serious researchers begin with the Carpenter books. The biography is very readable. The Letters are heavy going in places by their very nature, but a necessity for anyone seeking to understand Tolkien's attitudes to his own life and works. They are also very funny in places, and are now well indexed. And contain those quotes about Tom Bombadil, as well as much else concerning Middle-earth.
