J.R.R.Tolkien's fantasy classic, originally told to his children. The Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit of substance and somewhat sedentary habits. One day he is visited by a crusty wizard, Gandalf, and a gaggle of dwarves. By supper time he has accepted a challenge to go on an expedition to steal back a fortune from a live dragon, and liberate the ancient home of his companions. Fire and swords lie before him - but, fortunately, he doesn't know that. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Harper Collins |

After J.R.R.Tolkien's death in 1973, his son and literary executor, Christopher Tolkien, followed his father's wishes and gathered up his notes and literary papers of almost 60 years of storytelling to form the history of the First Age of Middle-earth. This became Tolkien's hitherto unfinished The Silmarillion. A series of compact and elegaic episodes tells the story of the creation of Arda, the coming of Elves and Men to Middle-earth, and their war with the Great Enemy to save the early world from destruction. The Silmarillion contains the historic background to the world of The Lord of the Rings, including the tale of Beren and Lúthien, and the history and downfall of Numenor, the original home of the Dunedain.

A collection of unfinished episodes and important notes from the history of Arda, including the coming of Tuor (Earendil's father) to Gondolin; the Narn I Hin Húrin (Tolkien's darkest story); Aldarion and Erendis (a tale of Numenor in the Second Age of Middle-earth); the histories of Galadriel and Celeborn; the disaster of the Gladden Fields (a story of Gondor in the Third Age); Cirion and Eorl and the Friendship of Gondor and Rohan; the Quest of Erebor and the Hunt for the Ring (events prior to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings); the battles of the Fords of Isen (the fall of Théodred Théoden's son at the time of The Lord of the Rings); and notes on the Druedain (Pukel-men); the Istari (that's the stuff about the other three wizards that everyone is always asking about) and the Palantiri.

The twelve volumes of JRR Tolkien's hitherto unpublished notes, drafts and supplementary tales for the Arda cycle. Essential reading for serious Tolkien readers with lots of time and a real love of footnotes.
There is no room to describe the contents in more detail here, but in the fullness of time I hope to prepare a separate page that will list the contents of the Histories in some detail.

Aegidius Ahenobarbus Julius Agricola de Hammo, known as Giles, chases a giant out of his village one night and receives a second-hand sword as a reward from the king. Unknown to Giles, the sword Tailbiter has an ancient Name and a score to settle. Written to explain the names of the villages around the town of Thame in Oxfordshire, England, this is a lovely comic tale for children and adults.
Now once again embellished by Pauline Baynes' medieval-style characters, of whom JRR Tolkien wrote: "I am pleased with them beyond even the expectations arounsed by the first examples. They are more than illustrations, they are a collateral theme. I showed them to my friends, whose polite comment was that they reduced by text to a commentary on the drawings."

Fortunate is the child who swallows the silver star in the Great Cake at the Feast of Good Children, for he will become acquainted with Faerie. Smith is one of those children, and "he was as safe as a mortal can be in that perilous country". But what happens when it is time for the star to pass on? Written almost as the valediction of J.R.R.Tolkien's life of teaching and writing, his last story is a tale of the nature, and perhaps the ethics, of Faerie and celebratory cake-making. It should be particularly valued by anyone called Smith.
This story is also in the collections Tales from the Perilous Realm (UK) (SEE FURTHER DOWN) or The Tolkien Reader (USA).

Letters started to arrive from Father Christmas to the Tolkien children in 1920 and continued for over 20 years, telling of his tribulations at his home at the North Pole, his friends the North Polar Bear, the Snow Boys, and his secretary, the efficient elf Ilbereth (a proper working elf, not one of those tall musical types you find in The Lord of the Rings). Each letter was richly illustrated in colour by Tolkien himself.
