These can be divided into two categories, the physical and the intangible.
On the physical side: you will receive a membership card and the regular publications (Amon Hen, the bulletin, usually six times a year and Mallorn, the journal, at least once a year). Members also gain access to the large range of sales goods which the Society makes available to its members. Occasional sales offers, from the Society and external organisations, offer substantial discounts on other items. (See the Sales List for details.)
On the intangible side: you join a world-wide Society, which has the concepts of "friendship" and "fellowship" as the main characteristics; you will be able to contact them through the pages of the publications or locally if there is a Smial near you. We enjoy a good relationship with the Tolkien family and with the Estate and publishers. We have a number of expert members (bibliographers, collectors, linguists and so forth) whose expertise can be "borrowed" as necessary.
Full , Associate and Student members are voting members of the Society. They are entitled to a lower rate of registration at Tolkien Society events, and the chance to stand for office in the Society. They can take part in decision-making at the Annual General Meeting.
Full membership can be bought by anyone of any age. Full members receive print copies of Mallorn and Amon Hen.
Associate membership, at half price, is available to anyone sharing the address of a full member. Associate nenbers do not recieve separate publications.
Student membership is our new, online service for anyone in full-time education. The annual fee of £10 entitles members to download copies of the journals as they become available.
Entings membership is low-cost for children under 16 years of age who do not wish to be Full or Associate members. Entings receive the News From Fangorn newsletter six times a year. They are not voting members of the Society.

There is no fixed date on which you must join; membership runs for twelve months from the month of payment.
We do not sell or otherwise pass on our members details to third parties. For information on our Data Protection policy please see our privacy statement.
From 6 April 2000 the present Covenant system and Gift Aid scheme will be replaced by a new Gift Aid scheme. If you are a UK tax payer your completion and return of this declaration will enable us to recover tax (currently 28p for every £1 you pay) on your membership payments and any donations you make to the Society. The only restriction is that you must have paid as much tax as we reclaim (this can be any income tax or capital gains tax including tax deducted at source by banks or building societies and regardless of rate at which tax was deducted).
You should print this, along with your name and address, on a separate sheet, and sign and date it, in order to permit us to reclaim tax.
This declaration confirms my wish to make donations and membership payments to The Tolkien Society under the Gift Aid Scheme and applies to all donations and membership payments made by me from 6 April 2000. I understand that I must pay an amount of Income or Capital Gains Tax in the relevant tax year equal to any tax reclaimed by The Tolkien Society in that period.
I confirm that I am a UK tax payer and that I will advise The Tolkien Society if this situation changes.
