In April 1998, Steve McCabe, MP for Hall Green, came to talk to the Tolkien Society at their Annual General Meeting and Dinner Weekend. This year, the AGM weekend was held at the Plough and Harrow Hotel, Birmingham.

Steve McCabe outlined his ideas for a Tolkien Park, and the way the Tolkien Society might become involved. For most members, who had only read a report of his ideas in The Sunday Times, this meeting was the first opportunity to hear that this was, most definitely, not a theme park!

The general outlines were very warmly welcomed. It appears that, even if the Tolkien Park does not have a Tolkien Centre (and it would be much the poorer for that, of course) it will still be an improvement on the current use of the land. At present, it is not decided how the project will go forwards, and what part the Tolkien Society could play in it.

The Tolkien Society is currently re-writing the Proposal. This will refer specifically to the Sarehole site.
