2004 Seminar: Tolkien influenced and influencing

The 2004 Tolkien Society seminar

The theme for this year's Seminar was Influences on Tolkien and the Influence that Tolkien has had on others.

The speakers were:

Alison Milbank: "Tolkien and the Gift"
Alison is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia in the USA

Maggie Fernandes: "The Theory of names in The Lord of the Rings by J R R Tolkien"
Maggie is a post graduate student at the New University of Lisbon in Portugal

Michele Fry: "The Influence of Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings on Women Fantasy Authors"
Michele is an independent scholar, from Oxford she has published articles on Harry Potter and Siegfried Sassoon.

Colin Duriez: "Some light on Tolkien and C S Lewis: a mutual influence"
Colin has written many books about J R R Tolkien and his contemporaries. His most recent book is J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.Lewis

Paul Kerry: "The Idea of Influence, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism&quot: A Historian's Perspective;
Paul is from Queen's College, Oxford.

Nataliya Oryshchuk: "Some Aspects of Tolkien's reception in post-Soviet Culture"
Nataliya is a post graduate student at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Nataliya was unable to make it to the Seminar and her paper was read for her by Trevor Reynolds.

Jessica Yates: "Fantasy films before and after Peter Jackson"
Jessica is a children's book critic and librarian from London. She edited the fantasy collection Dragons and Warrior Daughters.

The Seminar was held at St Martin's College, Carlisle, England on Saturday 17 July 2004. On the Friday evening there was a "bring a bottle" moot at the Tithe Barn and on the Saturday evening discussion was cotinued at an Innmoot at "The Sportsman".

Future Seminars

There will be no Seminar in 2005 instead there is a Conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Lord of the Rings: Tolkien 2005

The next Seminar will be in July 2006 possibly in Telford
