2006 Seminar: Politics and Middle-earth

The 2006 Tolkien Society Seminar was held on Saturday 22 July in the Pierce Room at the Assembly House, Norwich, England.

Programme

• Lynn Whittaker "Join the Tolkien Party". An exploration of how both Tolkien's work and adaptations of his work relate to real life politics, left, right and centre.
• Raffaella Benvenuto "Tolkien as a right-wing icon: The Strange case of Italy"
• Discussion on the use of Tolkien by politicians.
• Lunch
• Rosetta Sirico-Codling "Metaphysics, mythology, and the politics of the "fantastic" in J R R Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring and Ben Okri's The Famished Road"
• David Doughan "The Purging of the Shire" An examination of the chapter "The Scouring of the Shire".
• Discussion on politics within The Lord of the Rings

The Friday night Innmoot was held at the Adam and Eve pub, in Bishopsgate. Twelve people attended the pre-seminar dinner at Merchants of Colegate.

The Saturday night Innmoot started off at the Coach and Horses in Thorpe Road and moved to the Compleat Angler on Prince of Wales Road later in the evening.

On Sunday, fourteen people departed from Norwich station at 09:36 to Berney Arms request stop. From there we walked the ¼ mile to Berney Arms Mill which had been specially opened for us by English Heritage. After touring the mill most of us adjourned for lunch at Berney Arms Inn before flagging down the last train back to Norwich at 14:27.
