The Seminar takes place in June or July, and, like the AGM, moves about the country. They have taken place in most years since 1986. In some recent years, it has become possible to run a seminar in Australia as well as in the UK.
In early summer each year (ideally) the Society runs a Seminar, usually in June or July. The venue location varies each time, often there is a moot on the Friday evening and a trip to a nearby place of interest on the day after to make a weekend of it for attendees. From time to time the Society will arrange to have two seminars in a summer with one in Britain and another in Australia, the TS tries to give members and non-members plenty of notice for these though so people in the Northern hemisphere can save up, and book early, for the flights.
Each Seminar consists of a programme of talks on a Tolkien-related theme (these themes are set early in the year with Calls for Papers circulated as widely as possible within and without the Society), and any member who wishes can prepare a paper. This means that the presentations range from the serious to the light in tone and there is usually something for everyone.
With the location and theme varying the Seminar is a chance to make new friends whilst enjoying a good discussion of Tolkien, visiting some historic sites, good food and good company.
