If you have ever felt that Oxonmoot stops too early then this year's event is just for you. We have added an extra day to allow even more talks and presentations. Bookings online are now available. Note that booking for rooms and accommodation is only available till the 5th of September. If you have any queries contact bookings AT tolkiensociety DOT org.
The call for papers is now closed. If you have submitted a paper you will be contacted soon by our daytime events coordinator.
Oxonmoot will be held from the evening of Thursday 25th. September until Sunday 28th. September at Christ Church. Christ Church is in the centre of Oxford and if you have ever seen any of the Harry Potter films you should be able to recognise the main dining hall as the refectory at Hogwarts School. A warm welcome is extended in advance to all this year's first timers, where better to experience your first Oxonmoot than at one of the historic colleges, with the Sheep's shop from Alice In Wonderland just across the road?
There will be all the usual events, an art show, sales room, hospitality room, two days of events and the party on the Saturday evening in the “Harry Potter” hall. On Sunday morning there will be the remembrance ceremony, Enyalië, at Professor Tolkien's grave in Wolvercote Cemetery. Coach transport to and from the cemetery will be provided but we cannot guarantee you a seat unless you indicate on your form that you require one.
Children are welcome to attend Oxonmoot. Children from 0-15 must be supervised closely and those from 16-17 years of age must have an adult on site who is responsible for them. Please contact Bookings as early as possible to discuss your requirements, especially if you would like to stay as a family in the college. Child prices are: £15 (member/enting 11-15); £17 (non-member 11-15); £1 (age 7-10); free (age 0-6 - but please tell us if they are attending).
People staying in college have access to the internet from their rooms and from the JCR. If you want to access the Internet from your room, you need to bring a network cable with you. These are not available from us or college. In JCR there is WIFI available. The passwords for internet access will be published in Oxonmoot Information, that you will get in your registration pack.
You can book any combination of rooms, food, both or neither, but your booking must be received by Friday 5th September. After this date you may still be able to register, but not book food/rooms. To qualify for the lower booking rate your form must be received by 31st July.
If you registered in advance, please remember to book your rooms & food on the new form. The single and twin en suite rooms have limited availability this year, so please book early for these and indicate further choices that you would be happy with, if applicable. The other choice is single standard rooms. Some pairs of single standard rooms are arranged in twin suites with a lounge - please indicate if you’d like one of these (subject to limited availability). Also note on the form who you want to be next to or share with, if not booking together, and don’t forget to tell us whether you need a quiet room. Room prices include breakfast. Parking for guests at the college is not available (other than for those with accessibility requirements).
If you would like to attend Friday's welcome dinner, a popular and convivial way of meeting new people, please select your menu choices on the booking form. The two-course Friday and Saturday canteen-style lunches must also be booked in advance (sample menus available on request). No other meals will be provided by college on any basis, but the central location of the venue means that a variety of eateries are on the doorstep. Special diets will be catered for at all meals if notified in advance. Please also state clearly if you are vegetarian in the box on the form.
Not all parts of Christ Church are accessible to wheelchair users but the college has introduced a number of measures to support visitors with disabilities. If you have a disability or mobility problem please make early contact bookings at bookings AT tolkiensociety DOT org and indicate your requirements on your form.
There is a need for stewards to help us run Oxonmoot smoothly. Duties will not be long or onerous and may well include being present at an event that you wish to attend anyway. Many first-timers find this a good way of getting to know people. We need help also to set up on Thursday and pack up on Sunday if your arrival and departure times permit. Help setting up and stripping down the equipment used during the Saturday party in the main hall is always needed. Please indicate on your form if you can help and the stewarding co-ordinator will get in touch with more information.
This year we have a room across the road in which events will happen. This requires a strict respect for the timings, both starting and finishing time and the break from both the speakers and Oxonmooters. If you have an important chat, or comment either with a fellow Oxonmooter or with one of the speakers, please do so outside the event rooms, to allow for a smooth change between rooms. We remind you that hospitality (in JCR) is a good place for socialising, and that there is a bar available on site too.
These are very welcome. If you would like to write a short piece on how you experienced this Oxonmoot, we would like to hear it. First-timers point of view is important to us, but so is the point of view of old-timers. Share your experience with us and others. Send reports to Andrew Buttler at amonhen AT tolkiensociety DOT org for Amon Hen and to Meggy McMurry at osc DOT dte AT tolkiensociety DOT org.
Singing, dancing, recitations, sketches or full scale musicals are needed for Saturday night. Please contact Helen at osc DOT ents AT tolkiensociety DOT org and don't forget to get sewing for the costume masquerade.
Do you wish to exhibit your paintings, drawings, tapestries, embroideries, dioramas, stained glass or any like creation at this year's art show? Then please contact Becky at osc DOT art AT tolkiensociety DOT org.
There will be an auction over the course of the moot. If you would like to donate anything for this please contact Andrew Wells at owp2 AT tolkiensociety DOT org .
Specific enquiries about attendance should be directed to Bookings at bookings AT tolkiensociety DOT org, whilst for general enquiries about Oxonmoot contact the Oxonmoot Chairman at osc DOT chair AT tolkiensociety DOT org.
We look forward to welcoming you to Oxonmoot.
Helen Armstrong (Acting Chairman)
