Getting to LMH

A quick guide to getting to Lady Margaret Hall from the railway station and the central bus station at Gloucester Green.

This year we are staying at Lady Margaret Hall (LMH), which lies to the north of the town centre. The college entrance is at the end of Norham Gardens and is shown on the map that is with the restaurant guide. This is a guide to help you get to the college as simply as possible with the minimum of walking, although it needs to be pointed out that LMH is about 500 metres from the nearest bus stop, which is marked B on the map.

Note that where particular bus stops are mentioned in the routes described, the bus will not necessarily stop at them if the button has not been pressed and there is no one is waiting to get on. You must keep a careful watch for the landmarks mentioned and press the button. You will see an illuminated sign at the front of the bus saying "stopping" or "bus stopping" to confirm that the bus will stop.

Routes from Oxford Railway Station

If you arrive by train several options are open. There are plenty of taxis and the rank is located directly in front of the station.

If you arrive in Oxford railway station before 6:50pm there is a direct bus service, the 14 and 14A, from the station to the closest bus stop to LMH. This service leaves the station bus stop R5 at 20 minutes and 50 minutes past the hour up to 18:50. Come out the station main entrance and go down the stairs. Cross over to the first island and turn right, stop R5 is in front of you. Buy a ticket for Bevington Road. The bus leaves the station forecourt and turns left into Frideswide Square, you should see the Royal Oxford Hotel on your left. It goes along Park End Street and turns left past Worcester Street car park before going along George Street. George Street is one of Oxford's main shopping areas and you should see restaurants and the theatre along here. At the end of George Street it turns left past Debenham's and goes along Magdalene Street.where you will see the church of St. Mary Magdelene on your right followed closely by the Martyrs' Memorial. The bus goes past the traffic lights and along St. Giles' Street which has four lanes and has trees along each side. At the end it takes the right hand road, St. Giles' church is on the left, and starts to go along Banbury Road. It is getting quite close to Bevington Road, look for the eight storey, concrete university engineering science building on the right and press the stop signal. There are traffic lights at the junction of Parks Road and Banbury Road and the bus goes past these and will stop in about fifty metres. Get off here. Look at the bus stop and it should say Bevington Road. Walk back to the traffic lights and cross over the road, to your right will be the University Parks and there is a brown tourist information sign showing directions to the Parks, The Oxford Story, Covered Market, Sheldonian Theatre and Pitt Rivers Museum. After crossing go straight ahead into Parks Road and take the first road on the left, Norham Gardens. Walk along this to the end and you will see the entrance to LMH in front of you

After 18:50 the 14 and 14A bus service become the 17 and 17A and go a vey differnt route so do not take them. At this point there are no direct services to Banbury Road and it will be necessary to get a taxi or to walk to the nearest bus stop. Come out of the station, go down the steps and cross to the far side of the forecourt using the pedestrian crossing. Go right and head towards the station exit. In front is Frideswide Square, turn left and head for Hythe Bridge Street, you will pass to the left of  the Royal Oxford Hotel. Go past the Chinese supermarket and Thai restaurant, over the river and head towards the pedestrin crossing. In front is George Street, on the corner is a tall brick building with three grey domes on top whic you need to pass to the right of. Cross the road at the lights and head along George Street pas the bus station, Jessops, Yates Wine Lodge and along to the end of the road where Debenham's is. Turn left into Magdalene Street and you will see five bust stops marked C1 to C5. Position yourself between C1 and C2 and get either a 2, 2A, 2B, 2C or 2D from C1 or a 7, 7A or 7B from C2. Get a ticket for Bevington Road and follow the instructions above.

Routes from Oxford Central Bus Station

If you travel by National Express coach then you will arrive at the Central Bus Station in Gloucester Green. After getting off go onto the pavement at the front of the bus, turn right and walk back down the way the coach came in, and turn left onto George Street. Go up the street past The Old Fire Station and Yates Wine Lodge to Debenhams. Turn left into Magdalene Street and get any of the 2  or 7 services fron bust stops C1 and C2 as described above.

If you want to take a taxi after getting off at the bus station, head along the alley which is next to Harvey’s sandwich shop, go into Gloucester Green (notable for being completely paved over and not very green at all) and the taxi rank is straight ahead across the square. There are trolleys available to haul your bags across Gloucester Green, but you have to put in a £1 coin, which you get back at the taxi rank.

Arriving at the college by car

It is easiest by far to approach LMH from the North, along Banbury Road. On a UK road map this is the A4165 and is signposted Summertown. Head South and in to Summertown where there is a range of shops and restaurants. Keep going straight ahead past Marston Ferry traffic lights. There aren't many obvious landmarks so the roads on the left hand side are: Belbroughton Road, Linton Road (with the Parklands Hotel on the corner), Bardwell Road, Park Town, the other end of Park Town and Norham Road with the Cotswold Lodge Hotel on the corner. Turn left into Norham Road follow this until you see Fyfield Road on the right. Go along Fyfield Road until the end and turn left. You are looking at the entrance to LMH.

Parking

There is no parking available at LMH except for those with special needs and have indicated this on the booking form. The college is within one of the controlled parking zones of Oxford and parking on the street nearby is illegal during certain times. These rules are waived for blue badge holders.

According to Oxford Council's website, secure overnight parking can be arranged at Gloucester Green Underground Car Park at a charge of £5 in addition to the normal tariff.
