BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship to Honour Tolkien

Next Sunday (26 October) morning, BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Worship programme will broadcast a service live from Merton College Chapel, Oxford which will commemorate “the life and spirituality” of Tolkien in the context of his experience of the First World War.

Tolkien, who as a young man had fought in the Battle of the Somme, was Professor of English Language and Literature at Merton College from 1945 until his retirement in 1959.

Due to start at 08:10, the service will be led by the Revd Professor Alister McGrath, along with the Revd Dr Simon Jones, and will feature Merton College Choir.

The Revd Dr Simon Jones, Chaplain of Merton College Oxford, and the Revd Professor Alister McGrath explore the life and spirituality of J R R Tolkien, one of Merton’s most famous dons, in the light of his experience in the First World War. With Merton College Choir directed by Benjamin Nicholas and accompanied by Charlie Warren and Peter Shepherd. Producer: Stephen Shipley.
