The first round of nominations for The Tolkien Society Awards 2017 is now open.

The Awards recognise excellence in Tolkien scholarship and fandom, furthering the Society’s long-standing charitable objective to “seek to educate the public in, and promote research into, the life and works of Professor John Ronald Reuel Tolkien CBE“.

“We recognise the very best in Tolkien scholarship and fandom. The Awards are now firmly established in the Tolkien calendar, whilst winning a Tolkien Society Award is a unique and highly prised accolade.” – Shaun Gunner, Chair

This year’s categories – the same as 2016 – are:

  • Best Artwork
  • Best Article
  • Best Book
  • Best Website

And

  • Outstanding Contribution Award

Tolkien Society Chair Shaun Gunner said: “This is the fourth year of the Awards, and every year they’ve gone from strength to strength. We’re mixing up the process this year to give Tolkien Society members a greater say over how the winners are decided, in a process that aims to recognise the very best in Tolkien scholarship and fandom. I am proud that The Tolkien Society is continuing to further its charitable objectives to promote research into the life and works of Tolkien, and these Awards are evidence of that.

The winners will be announced during the Annual Dinner at the Springmoot and AGM on Saturday 22nd April at the Warwick Arms Hotel.

How it works

The Awards cover the 2016 calendar year; there is no restriction on where books/articles/websites are published/hosted, but they should all be in English. The Best Book Award applies to both an edited book with multiple articles by different authors as well as a book by the same author(s) throughout. The Outstanding Contribution Award recognises individuals who have made important and exceptional contributions to Tolkien scholarship, Tolkien fandom, or the promotion of Tolkien and his works.

The nominations process consists of two rounds:

  1. During the first round, any one can submit nominations using the form below. Round one will close on Friday 24th February.
  2. A shortlist will be then be prepared by The Tolkien Society trustees for the second round; please note that the number of nominations will not be taken into account when shortlisting. The second round of voting will be open only to members of The Tolkien Society. Round two will close on 8th April 2017.
