The third and final Hobbit film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, has been nominated for just one category in the 87th Academy Awards: Best Sound Editing. This falls short of Jackson’s previous films, including The Return of the King which received 11 Oscars.

A team of researchers – led by Martin Barker at Aberystwyth University – are conducting a worldwide project to survey people’s views on The Hobbit films. They are particularly keen to hear from “those who know Tolkien well”.

The British Library is set to preserve a recording of Tolkien’s voice from 1929 as part of its “Save our Sounds” project.

An English teacher at the University of New Mexico is offering a class to students comparing Mediaevalism and Middle-earth.

John D. Rateliff’s A Brief History of The Hobbit has been published. The tome is a reduced version of Rateliff’s The History of The Hobbit, first published in two volumes in 2007.

Today marks the 123rd anniversary of Tolkien’s birth. The Tolkien Society invites Tolkien fans all over the world to participate in our annual Birthday Toast.
